1819 to 1901

Grand Union Canal

Originally called the Grand Junction Canal until 1929, it was started in 1795 and completed in 1805, it linked London to the Oxford Canal at Braunston. This gave a more direct route to the North of England, cutting out the more indirect route via Oxford, following the ancient route of Watling Street.

Railway

Opened by the London and Birmingham Railway Company in 1838.
