1066 AD On 14 October 1066 the Battle of Hastings saw the defeat of Harold II, Saxon king of England by the invading William, duke of Normandy. This paved the way for the Norman subjugation of all England, and William the Conqueror rewarded his loyal knights and bishops the lands and manors of England.

A timber tower built on an earth mound (motte), usually surrounded by a deep water filled ditch. This in turn was inside an area (the bailey) surrounded by a ditch or hedge. The bailey also contained the main hall of the manor and associated buildings.
