Original Town, Anglo-Saxon: Blecca's Lea
(meadow).
In World War II Bletchley played a very important role: Bletchley Park
, a large Manor in the heart of the town became the
centre for Allied decryption of German cyphers. To aid in this
decryption, the Colossus, the
world's first electronic valve computer, was built in 1943 and
operational in February 1944.
It was at Bletchley Park that Alan Turing
worked during the war on the German cyphers such as the Enigma Code.
Turing "The father of the Modern Computer" is famous for the Turing Machine,
the first logical specification of a computer as we know it,
and the Turing Test, a test for artificial intelligence.
